VIDEO: El-Sheikh scores late to send Egypt to World Military Cup semis

Al Ahly loanee and El-Maqassa winger Ahmed El-Sheikh scored a late winner against Algeria to send Egypt to the World Military Cup semi-finals.

The Pharaohs qualified to quarter-finals as group D runners-up after they finished two points behind Syria, who advanced to the semi-finals after beating Germany 2-1.

ENPPI forward Amr Marei scored the opening goal of the match after 35 minutes with a wonderful volley, ending the first-half 1-0 to the Pharaohs.

Marei’s goal:

Six minutes into the second-half, Mohamed Amine Hamia scored the equaliser for Algeria after a defensive error from El-Maqassa centre-back Ahmed Sami, making it 1-1.

Amr Marei nearly scored the winner in the 92nd minute, but Algeria’s goalkeeper denied him with a brilliant save, taking the game to extra time.

The game was going to penalty shootout as both teams failed to score, however, in the 121th minute substitute Ahmed El-Sheikh scored a stunner to send Egypt to the World Military Cup semi-finals.

El-Sheikh’s late winner:

The Pharaohs are set to face hosts Oman, who beat Mali easily 5-0, in the semi-finals on January 26 at Sultan Qaboos Stadium in Muscat.

Meanwhile, Syria beat Germany 2-1 to face Qatar in the other semi-final after the latter defeated Bahrain 4-2 on Penalties.
