Egypt defeated the Atlas Lions for the first time since 1986 as Mahmoud ‘Kahraba’ snatched the win for the Pharaohs in the last minutes of the game, ending Renard’s hopes to win three back-to-back AFCON titles after winning the cup with Zambia and Ivory Coast in the previous two tournaments.

“We gave the best we could in the match, but that’s how it is with football,” Renard told Bein Sports TV channel after the match. “It was a really complicated game, we lost in the dying minutes from a corner kick.”

“I would like to thank the players and the technical staff for their efforts in the tournament,” he added.

The 48-year-old coach praised and congratulated the Pharaohs for their qualification. “Hector Cuper is a great coach who managed to lead Egypt to win the match on this bad pitch,” he said. “My message to the rest of the teams is to watch out because Egypt is back.”
