Duarte: We are playing against the most successful team in Africa
Burkina Faso manager Paulo Duarte spoke about the Egyptian national team, and Mohamed Salah ahead of their game against Egypt in the AFCON semi-finals.
The Stallions are set to face Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals on Wednesday, January 1 in Libreville at Stade de l’Amitié.
Burkina Faso knocked out Tunisia in the quarter-finals to qualify to their only third Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals, while Egypt qualified to their 15th semi-finals.
“We are playing a semi-final. Its most important thing for us. It will be a collective mission. We are playing against the most successful team in Africa,” Duarte said in his press conference on Tuesday.
“We shall have possession of the ball. They use the counter and we shall work had to stop it. They have Salah who is very dangerous but we can handle him. We expect to win.
“We have shown and convinced the public that Burkina Faso can play good football. We have unity in the team,” he added.
The Pharaohs have never lost a game against Burkina Faso, as they have met on six previous occasions; Egypt have won four of those matches and drew two, but the Portuguese manager doesn’t believe in history.
“I do not believe in history. It is delusion. Each match creates its own history. Burkina Faso vs. Egypt will be a tactical war,” he added.
“All our players are focused for the match against Egypt.
“If you ask me how we are going to stop Mohamed Salah, its like asking the coach of Egypt how are they stopping Bertrand Traoré.
“Playing in Libreville throughout is not the only advantage. Senegal lost yet they were playing in Franceville throughout,” he concluded.
