KingFut covers the live actions as Egypt take on Burkina Faso in the first semi-final of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

Burkina Faso’s route to the last four began with a group stage draw that – on paper – suggested progression to the knockout stages would be a complicated affair, as they were drawn with hosts Gabon and four-time champions Cameroon.

However, Les Etalons made light work of their arguably more illustrious opponents, drawing 1-1 with both sides before dispatching Guinea-Bissau 2-0 to top Group A.

The West Africans’ quarter-final clash with Tunisia was an incredibly tight affair until the 81st minute, when veteran Aristide Bancé sneaked a free-kick into the far bottom corner of Mathlouthi’s goal to put his side in front. As the North Africans rushed forward in search of an equaliser, Préjuce Nakoulma struck the killing blow from a lightning counter to seal his side’s qualification to the semi-finals.

This is Burkina Faso’s third-ever appearance in the last four of the competition, following a fourth-placed finish when they hosted the tournament in 1998 – when Egypt won the title with a young Essam El-Hadary in the squad – and a runner-up spot in 2013.

Egypt, meanwhile, topped Group D after drawing with Mali and defeating Uganda and Ghana. With their slim victory over Morocco in the quarter-finals – a win that ended a 31-year wait to defeat Morocco – Héctor Cúper’s men remain the only side in the tournament yet to concede a goal, and the Argentine’s pragmatism has paid dividends so far.

Egypt defeated Burkina Faso at the semi-final stage in 1998; will the Pharaohs manage a repeat to set up a record-equaling ninth final, or will Paulo Duarte’s charges avenge that defeat on their way to fight for their first-ever trophy?
