Duarte: The referee had a decisive influence on the result
The Stallions were unable to reach their second African Cup of Nations final in four years after the match ended in a 1-1 draw and both sides failed to score in extra time. The Pharaohs, however, managed to claim victory after defeating Burkina Faso in dramatic penalties shootout.
“We had two penalty appeals turned down. I don’t know why he denied those penalties,” Duarte told beIN Sports. “I am not used to speaking about refereeing, but the referee had a decisive influence on the result.”
Burkina Faso failed to defeat Egypt for the seventh encounter between both sides.
“I am disappointed with the result after we played a great came,” he added. “We had the upper hand but in football, the better does not always win, and this was the case today. The game was very tough. It was a game between the best attack in the tournament and the best defence. It was a very tactical game.”
