Egypt drawn against Morocco in 2018 CHAN qualifiers
Egypt were drawn against Morocco in the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers, with the draw held in Libreville, Gabon on Friday.
This marks Egypt’s first ever participation in the qualifiers of the competition, which was created in 2009, exclusively featuring players who play in their respective national leagues. In January, Egypt’s local national team coach Hany Ramzy chose 36 players for a training camp for the qualifiers.
The draw was done according to the zonal representation of the national associations affiliated to the CAF, with the teams divided into six zones; Northern, West A, West B, Central, Central East, and Southern.
Egypt will play Morocco in two-legs while Libya will face Algeria. With only four teams in the Northern Zone, the winners will qualify directly to the tournament.
The first leg is set for 11-13 August in Egypt, 2017 whilst the second leg will be held between 18-20 August, 2017.
West A zone has been allotted two teams in the final competition, while three teams will advance from West B zone. Qualification will be done over two rounds in these two zones, with the first round in July 2017 and the second round in August.
The Central Zone has also been given three slots. The teams will be determined in just one round in August 2017.
Three spots will be allotted to each of the Southern and Central East zone. The qualifications in these two zones will be done in three rounds. Being the hosts of the competition, Kenya already took up one of the Central East zone’s three slots.
The 5th edition of the tournament will be held in Kenya between 11 Jan. and 2 Feb. 2018.
