Burkina Faso seal third place in AFCON with 1-0 victory over Ghana

A late free-kick from Alain Traore secured Burkina Faso third place in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations as they defeated Ghana 1-0 on Saturday.

The Black Stars wasted several scoring chances during the first half as they were let down by poor finishing. Edward Agyemang Badu missed a header from close range just three minutes after kickoff, while Bernard Tekpetey wasted another chance by hitting the crossbar midway through the first half.

Burkina Faso’s most dangerous chance before halftime fell to Prejuce Nakoulma who led a counter attack, only to end up firing wide of target.

Ghana continued to threaten their opponents during the early stages of the second half with Jordan Ayew wasting a chance to break the deadlock as his shot went over the bar.

Ghana goalkeeper Richard Ofori however produced a fine save, denying Cyrille Bayala from opening the scoring 12 minutes from time.

As the game seemed to be headed for penalties, Stallions forward Alain Traore fired a left-footed shot from a free-kick into the top corner of the net to seal the bronze medal for Burkina Faso.

Burkina Faso were eliminated by Egypt in the semi-final after losing 4-3 in a penalty shootout, while Cameroon defeated Ghana 2-0 to secure a spot in the final.
