Egypt defender Hegazy: Conceding Cameroon’s first goal was a tough moment
Egypt national team and Al Ahly defender Ahmed Hegazy spoke about the hardest match for the Pharaohs in the 2017 African Cup of Nations and his opinion about the Egyptian defence line performance in the tournament.
Cameroon stopped Hector Cuper’s quest in the African championship as they defeated Egypt in the final match 2-1.
“When we went to Gabon, our performance in the first match wasn’t very good,” Hegazy told CBC TV channel. “After this match, we got closer to each other and started thinking about making fans happy.”
As for the toughest match of the tournament for him, Hegazy said that the final match wasn’t the hardest. “Burkina Faso was the hardest match, but the toughest moment in the tournament was after Cameroon’s equaliser.”
For this goal, the ex-Fiorentina defender assured that at that time the team was extremely pressured. “I feel bad that we received two goals like those received in the final but it is normal for an exhausted team to lose in their final match,” he explained. “We know that it is hard to score goals in finals, we told strikers to try and score and leave defence for us because we felt that our efforts are being wasted like that.”
The 26-year-old thinks that the defence line performed well and followed instructions carefully. “We endured a lot, especially in Morocco and Ghana match,” he added.
