Egyptian legend El-Khatib explains ‘three reasons’ for losing AFCON title
Egypt failed to win a record-extending eighth Africa Cup of Nations title after losing 2-1 to Cameroon in the final on Sunday.
The former Al Ahly star explained that lack of experience was one of three main reasons behind the Pharaohs’ defeat in the final.
“None of these players represented Egypt in the AFCON before except [Essam] El-Hadary, [Ahmed] Fathi, [Ahmed] Elmohamady and [Mohamed] Abdelshafy,” El-Khatib said during an interview with Abu Dhabi Sports satellite channel.
El-Khatib added that playing consecutive games under pressure with no time to rest had negatively affected the performances of Egypt’s players. He believes Cameroon had an advantage over the Pharaohs when it came to physique and fitness levels.
“In addition, Cameroon have 20 players who ply their trade overseas,” he added.
Bibo looks at the glass as half full as he stated that although the Pharaohs did not win the tournament, they now have a new generation of players who can represent the Egyptian national team in many tournaments ahead.
