Al Ahly manager El-Badry: We were better than Zamalek
Al Ahly manager Hossam El-Badry believes his team played better than Zamalek in the Egyptian Super Cup match, which saw the White Castle win 3-1 on penalties.
The Red Castle missed out on a record-extending 10th Super Cup title after drawing 0-0 with Zamalek in Abu Dhabi on Friday, before losing the title on penalties.
“We were better than Zamalek who didn’t even have a single corner over the 90 minutes,” the Al Ahly manager said during the post-match press conference.
The former Al Ahly player congratulated Zamalek, but said that penalties require luck and that his side wasn’t lucky during the penalty shootout. He added that Al Ahly had several chances in the second half but failed to capitalize on those opportunities.
“We pressured and threatened Zamalek in the second half, especially with Ajayi’s chance. It was not our day,” El-Badry added, referring to Nigerian striker Junior Ajayi, who missed out on a chance to score the winner two minutes from time.
The Red Devils coach said that international players were exhausted, as the game was held few days after the Africa Cup of Nations final, explaining it was irrational to make three changes to his starting lineup to rest those players.
“Al Ahly paid the price of playing the Super Cup at this improper timing,” El-Badry explained.
He added that his side will now focus on the league and will start preparing for their game against Ismaily, scheduled for Wednesday.
