Recently resigned Ghana coach Avram Grant spoke about how set pieces did not help the Black Stars in the 2017 African Cup of Nations in Gabon as the team conceded three goals in the tournament from free-kicks.

Grant resigned from his post after he failed to lead the Black Stars to the AFCON final as Ghana was eliminated by Cameroon in the semi-final and then finished in fourth place after losing to Burkina Faso.

The first goal in their match against Cameroon was conceded from a free-kick. The team also conceded a goal from a free-kick against Burkina Faso and another free-kick by Mohamed Salah in their match against Egypt in the group stage.

“The set pieces really cost us. In the Egypt game we conceded, in the Cameroon game, we also conceded in the Burkina Faso game,” said the former Chelsea manager. “We could have avoided the set pieces, especially where they happened and that would have changed our story.”

Grant, however, praised his players and their performance in the tournament. “The team showed great promise in the tournament, it’s a young team and has a great future,” he added.
