Egypt national team manager Hector Cuper spoke about the Pharaohs’ recent impressive 2017 African Cup of Nations quest and preparations for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The new generation managed to reach the 2017 AFCON final match but lost the title to Cameroon despite leading the game in the first half. Egypt however secured a place in the top 25 of February’s FIFA World Ranking. The Pharaohs are currently on top of the African ranking for the first time in seven years.

“We were hoping to bring happiness to the Egyptian people but that’s football; one team has to win and one has to lose,” the Argentinian coach told FIFA official website.

Cuper also expressed his sadness as he lost his sixth final match in his career saying: “Personally, I’m sad because I lost yet another final. But I’m sadder because I could not make the Egyptian fans happy, as they were expecting an eighth African title. I know how much Egyptians love football, and I apologized to them for this loss.”

The 61-year-old manager is aiming to take advantage of the important lessons learned from his AFCON adventure and is positive about leading the team to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Egypt is currently on top of Group E with six points.

“We unveiled a new generation in terms of Egyptian football. We have important games to come as part of World Cup qualifying, and so preparations must start as of now,” he added.

In addition to being a hardcore football fan, Abdelrahman is a communications enthusiast who works in marketing, advertising, content creation and PR.
