After two successive defeats in the league, Zamalek returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Tala’a El-Gaish in gameweek 19.

After uneventful 12 minutes, El-Gaish won a penalty when Moruf Yusuf fouled Ahmed Eid Abdel-Malek inside the box. Assem Salah stepped up to put his side in front.

Zamalek, however, managed to equalise five minutes later through Ayman Hefny who cut inside before firing into the net with a curling effort.

Hefny added his second goal on the half-hour mark to give Zamalek the lead with a powerful shot from the edge of the box.

Four minutes later, Hefny was close to complete his hat-trick. Mostafa Fathi made an amazing effort on the right side, beating three defenders before finding Hefny, but the latter’s shot went inches above the post.

Both teams failed to add more goals, as the Zamalek headed into halftime with a 2-1 lead.

Just after the resumption of the game for the second half, Zamalek were forced to make their first substitution as injured Mahmoud Dunga made way for Ahmed Tawfik.

Nine minutes into the second half, Stanley Ohawuchi doubled Zamalek’s lead. The Nigerian striker met Moruf Yusuf’s brilliant cross into the box with a powerful header into Emad El-Sayed’s net.

Around the one-hour mark, Ahmed Eid forced Zamalek keeper Ahmed El-Shennawy into a brilliant save as Zamalek maintained their 2-1 lead.

In the 71st minute, Hefny’s night came to an end as he was replaced by Ibrahim Salah.

Seven minutes later, El-Gaish managed to pull one back through Mohamed Ashraf, whose unstoppable free-kick left El-Shennawy helpless.

Bassem Morsy came close to scoring Zamalek’s fourth goal as he tried to chip over El-Gaish goalkeeper but Mo’tamed Mohsen made a goal-line clearance to keep the score at 3-2.

El-Gaish continued to push for an equaliser in the dying moments of the game, but failed as Zamalek secured the three points.

Zamalek are now third on 37 points in the league standings, 12 behind leaders Al Ahly, who played two more games. El-Gaish are seventh on 26 points from 17 games.
