Ahmed Nagy: El-Hadary will go to the World Cup
Egypt’s goalkeepers coach Ahmed Nagy has heaped praise on legendary goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary, confirming that he has a place in the team’s squad should the Pharaohs make it to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
El-Hadary was one of the protagonists in Egypt’s recent Africa Cup of Nations campaign which has seen the team reach the final, despite turning 44 in January.
The former Al Ahly goalkeeper had previously confessed his hopes to play the World Cup before retiring from football, and Nagy asserted that El-Hadary should be going to Russia.
“I would like to greet El-Hadary, he is a symbol of patience and fortitude. He trains well just like his teammates and maybe even better. He has never let me down and has a continuous desire to play. I think he will live difficult moments if he retires so I hope he continues,” Nagy told a local radio station.
“I have spoken with a friend of mine and I confirmed that we [Egypt coaching staff] will call El-Hadary for the World Cup, if he was still alive. Currently he is Egypt’s number 1 goalkeeper since he was playing in the last matches. El-Hadary is Africa’s greatest goalkeeper, his records and achievements speak for themselves. He is an exceptional case like Peter Shilton, Gianluigi Buffon and Rogerio Ceni.” he concluded.
