A late goal from substitute Amr Gamal gave Al Ahly a 1-0 victory over Wadi Degla in gameweek 20 of the Egyptian Premier League on Thursday.

Al Ahly had few chances in the early stages of the game but routinely failed to hit the target. Degla’s first chance came midway through the first half but Al Ahly skipper Hossam Ghaly cleared Degla’s cross for a corner.

Al Ahly keeper Sherif Ekramy was forced into a fine save, diverting Mostafa Talaat’s header into a corner, as the first half ended goalless.

The league leaders needed only six minutes to have their first chance after the break as Ahmed Fathi’s cross found Abdallah El-Said who fired from inside the box, but goalkeeper Khaled Walid’s double-save denied Al Ahly from breaking the deadlock.

Amr Gamal, who came on as a second-half substitute for Mido Gaber, came close to opening the scoring but his header hit the post, before a free-kick by Tunisian Ali Maaloul hit the woodwork.

Al Ahly’s pressure finally paid off as Gamal scored a winner ten minutes from time. The 25-year-old headed home after a brilliant cross from Maaloul to score his first goal in the league this season.

The Red Devils extended their lead at the top of the league table with 52 points after winning. Degla’s loss ended their six-match unbeaten streak as now sit eighth on 25 points.
