Mohamed El-Neny: I think we made the people in Egypt and the Arab world happy
Arsenal’s Egyptian starlet Mohamed El-Neny expressed his satisfaction in reaching the AFCON final, despite a heart-breaking loss from a goal in the closing minutes of the final game against Cameroon.
Arsenal’s midfield engine, as described by manager Arsène Wenger, believes that the AFCON competition was a successful experience for his fellow Egyptian players, coaching staff, the new football association and for the country in general. He added that he thinks that the Pharaohs made the people in Egypt and in the Arab world happy, because of their run in the competition.
El-Neny went on to say, “People needed something to unite them, make them cheer for and be happy about. We are happy with this achievement, but of course we would have loved to make them more happy and win the cup and bring it back to Egypt. We did our best and tried really hard but it wasn’t meant to be. This is God’s will and hopefully the future will bring us better things.”
Speaking on the goal he scored in the final and the future of Egyptian football, he added, “The goal I scored was very special for me, I imagined after the game how happy over 90 million people must have been when I scored. It was such an amazing feeling and we would have loved to win the cup but it wasn’t Allah’s will and I am sure in the future we will achieve something we have wanted for a long time.”
“I am not worried about the generation of players for Egypt, we left our mark and we made people believe again. The future will carry better things for us, God willing.”
Arsenal’s next game will be against Liverpool in the EPL on 4, March.2017 at Anfield, following their 2-0 victory against Sutton United in the Emirates FA Cup, which Neny was unfortunately injured and substituted in.
Concerning Neny’s injury, the 24 year-old posted a picture on Instagram of his left foot in a protective boot. The extent of the injury is still unknown.
