Egypt-owned Lierse fail to reach promotion playoffs
Lierse S.K. will be staying in the Belgian Second Division League as the team failed to top the table and reach the promotion playoffs.
The Belgium club, which is owned by Egyptian businessman Maged Samy, failed to win their match against K.S.V. Roeselare in the 14th and final round in the league as the match ended 1-1.
Lierse was close to the game’s three points after leading the match till the 84th minute, however, Roeselare managed to score an equalizer and stopped Lierse’s dream to head to the playoffs. The tie meant that Lierse will drop to second place with 27 points as opponents Antwerp won their final match after snatching a 90th-minute goal against Lommel United to top the league with 29 points.
Egyptian forward Dodo El-Gabbas and his teammates missed a golden opportunity to get closer to promotion to the Belgian First Division A as the team would have stayed in first place if they had won the match even if Antwerp managed to gain three points.
The first leg champions Roeselare will be facing second leg champions Antwerp in the playoffs for promotion.
In addition to Dodo El-Gabbas, Egypt international Karim Hafez and Ahmed Said ‘Zizo’ play for the Belgium side but are currently on loan to Lens and CD Nacional. Also, former Zamalek and Ismaily player Mohamed Abdel-Wahed is the team’s assistant manager.
