Defending champions Zamalek have advanced to quarter-final after beating second-tier side Haras El-Hodood 1-0 on Monday.

A second-half goal from Ayman Hefny helped the White Castle edge past El-Hodood, who put up a spirited fight in the opening half of the game at Petrosport Stadium.

The first half ended goalless, with the Cairo giants failing to create any real chances, while the Alexandrian side came close to scoring around the half-hour mark.

Around 20 minutes from time, Hefny, who came on as a second-half substitute, missed a great opportunity to put his side in the lead as he his shot was blocked by Hodood’s defense.

Two minutes later, Hefny broke the deadlock with a brilliant volley as Zamalek finally went ahead.

El-Hodood couldn’t find the equaliser in the remaining minutes as the game ended with a 1-0 win for Zamalek.

The White Knights had defeated lower-tier side Olympic in the round of 32. They will face Tala’a El-Gaish in the quarter-final as they attempt to secure their fifth consecutive Egypt Cup title.
