Monfils eliminates Safwat from Dubai Tennis Championships
Egypt’s Mohamed Safwat was knocked out of Dubai Tennis Championships from the first round after losing to French player Gael Monfils.
France no.2 and ATP no.12 Gael Monfils won the game 6-4, 6-3 after fighting for 80 minutes on the No4 seed’s first Dubai appearance since 2008.
“You always expect a tough match, but I wasn’t expecting that he had so much power with his forehand. You know, his forehand was super fast and deep,” said the 26-year-old Egyptian.
It was clear that the game’s crowd were taking Safwat’s side. Something that Monfils commented on saying: “I think they were happy, too, because Mohamed was playing very good tennis, you know, fantastic tennis.”
“For sure he’s pleased with his performance. You know, he had a wildcard and nothing to lose. Well, he played a tough one,” he added.
Safwat who is the second highest ranked Arab male tennis player and is ranked 197 in ATP rankings, received a wild card to play in Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship which started on February 25 and ends on March 4.
