Egypt have been knocked out of the U-20 AFCON and failed to reach the World Cup after losing to Zambia 3-1 in the third round of Group A.

Egypt XI: Ghandour; Hany, Galal, Marei, Fattouh; Beckham, Akram, Nedved, Maher, Hamedy; Mostafa Mohamed

After drawing their first two matches in the group-stages, Egypt lost their final game against hosts Zambia, which knocked them out of the tournament and ended their World Cup qualification hopes.

Egypt took the lead in the 36th minute after Al Ahly’s Karim Nedved poked in Mostafa Mohamed’s pass, before the latter fired a powerful shot in the 45th minute that was parried out brilliantly by the goalkeeper.

Right after the break, Zambia managed to equalize through Patson Daka, and three minutes later Egypt nearly retained the lead, but Mostafa Mohamed’s header was kept out by the post.

In the 64th minute, Mohamed Abdel-Salam replaced Mahmoud Marei after the latter stretchered off.

Zamalek’s Mostafa Mohamed fainted and caused a scare to both teams as he received a lengthy treatment and refused getting subbed off.

In the 73rd minute, Sakala scored a fine header for Zambia to make it 2-1, taking his tally this tournament to three goals, before Daka sealed the win for the hosts by scoring his second goal of the game.

With this result, Egypt finished third in group A with only two points, seven points behind leaders Zambia and two points behind Guinea, who qualified to the semi-finals and the World Cup with a 3-2 win against fourth-placed Mali.
