Zamalek Chairman Mortada Mansour who announced that the club will not continue with the league, has urged the team to focus on international competitions.

The White Knights are not only taking part in the CAF Champions League but they will also participate in the revived Arab Club Championship.

Mansour had met with the Zamalek squad players to motivate them ahead of their match against the 2016 Nigeria Premier League winners Enugu Rangers.

“We care more about African competitions this season than local ones, and we were almost crowned African champions last season so winning against the champions of Nigeria is not difficult. The circumstances of this season are better than last season when we had a shortage of players,” explained Mortada Mansour.

The club chairman also touched on their withdrawal from the 2016/2017 Egyptian Premier League season. He appears to have backtracked on his stance that Zamalek would not compete in the league under any circumstances.

He said, “We requested fair conditions to compete in the league, because Zamalek  has been oppressed and subjugated for over 60 years.”

Mortada Mansour asked the players to forget about everything that goes on with withdrawal from the league. Instead, they should focus on both the CAF Champions League and the Arab Club Championship.

He told them, “You have to not only focus on the African championship because they give a bonus of $2.5 million, but also the Arab tournament, which offers 100 million Egyptian Pounds in bonuses and will be hosted in Alexandria.”

“God willing, aim for a big win at home in order to give us a greater chance to qualify through the return match in Nigeria,” he concluded.

Zamalek will host Enugu Rangers this weekend in the first leg of the CAF Champions League round of 32. The winner will advance to the 16-team group stage.

I have dedicated part of my time in this bad world to following African football. From CECAFA to WAFU, COSAFA to UNAF & even the forgotten UNIFFAC.
