Ahmad Ahmad: I was a winner because a big country like Egypt believed in me
New CAF president Ahmad Ahmad has spoken to the press about his win and about the reasons that made him confident of that triumph.
In an interview conducted through ONSport together with Egypt FA chairman Hany Abou-Rida, CAF president Ahmad Ahmad talked about his latest triumph and how confident he was of his chances.
“We expected the win because we worked very hard as a team consisting of heads of Football Associations, but I was very scared just before the results,” Ahmad Ahmad said.
On being asked of his impression after being announced as a winner, the CAF president said: “I was a winner because a big country like Egypt believed in me.”
Ahmad Ahmad was also asked about Gianni Infantino, FIFA president, and his reaction to the win saying: “CAF is like a child of FIFA so of course he congratulated me, but he didn’t support me because he has an obligation to be neutral because of his job.”
Hany Abou-Rida also talked about the win of the candidate Egypt’s FA supported and was asked if Hayatou’s confidence just before the results were announced worried him.
“The team worked very hard and understood the elections well enough as we didn’t let people be confused as we gave them proper direction.”
Abou-Rida then proceeded to congratulate Ahmad Ahmad and stressing that heading the CAF is a difficult job, but the president will have his support always.
