Smouha suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of, Kenyan side, Ulinzi Stars in the second leg of their first round tie but still managed to advance.

The Alexandria team joins Al Masry in the playoff round. Al Masry qualified, earlier, without kicking a ball.

Smouha found themselves trailing in the eighth minute. Sammy Onyango scored the goal and could have made it two for himself, only two minutes later, save for the fact that he missed an open-goal chance.

Luck was on his side in the 27th minute. The Ulinzi player scored to halve Smouha SC’s lead. Smouha had won 4-0 in the first leg.

The home team’s push to overturn the aggregate scoreline suffered a set back in the 55th minute. The side was reduced to 10 men after John Kago was sent off.

But that did not deter them too much as they got a third goal in the 82nd minute, setting up an intense finish. Kenyan international fullback, Omar Mbongi got this third goal through a freekick.

Unfortunately, for the Kenyans, they couldn’t score another goal to level the tie. After their CAF Confederation Cup exit, Ulinzi Stars will now shift focus to the 2017 Kenya Premier League season.

Smouha proceed to the playoff round where they will play one of the 16 losing teams from the CAF Champions League first round ties. The matches will be played on the weekends of 7-9th and 14-16th April, 2017.

I have dedicated part of my time in this bad world to following African football. From CECAFA to WAFU, COSAFA to UNAF & even the forgotten UNIFFAC.
