Roma hosted Empoli in the Stadio Olimpico, with Empoli battling relegation and Roma trying to stay within striking distance of Juventus.

Roma XI: Szczesny, Manolas-Fazio-Rudiger, Mario Rui-Paredes-Nianggolan-Peres, Salah-Dzeko-Perotti.
Empoli XI: Skorupski, PasqualBarba- Veseli-Laurini, Krunic-Buchel-Croce, Kaddouri, Thiam-Marilungo.

Roma started the match with a 3-4-3 formation, including the Egypt international Mohamed Salah on the right flank. Roma’s build up was very slow in the opening 10 minutes of the game, but they were able to score after 12 minutes from a corner. The ball was played to Rudiger who was able to head the ball backwards for Dzeko to score from an easy tap-in inside the 6-yard box.

The Giallorossi then went on to control the game completely and were able to have some decent chances, with a long range shot from Paredes that was saved by Empoli’s Skorupski and a curling cross from Salah to Perotti but was headed far wide from the goal. Empoli, on the other hand, had only two real chances but were denied as offside from the referee.

In the opening 5 minutes of the second half, Empoli were very close from scoring their first goal after a decent ball from Marilungo, but were denied from a smart save from Szczesny on his near post. 9 minutes passed with Roma trying to break Empoli’s defensive wall before finally finding their way round to Empoli’s goal again after a brilliant header from Mohamed Salah which left Dzeko with one touch away from scoring his second of the night.

Spalletti’s half time team talk was very effective on his players as they entered the second half with a lot of spirit and a huge desire to win as evidenced from the Giallorossi’s creating a number of dangerous chances with Mohamed Salah almost earning himself his first goal of the match after his header bounced back from the crossbar.

Roma then made changes, with Perotti replaced by Grenier for the final 30 minutes of the game. The whole Olimpico roared in the final 15 minutes of the game after Totti was subbed in for Dzeko, minutes later Totti played a beautiful ball to Salah which left him one on one with the keeper but Salah’s left foot failed to find the target. Roma kept possession with the final 10 minutes of the game to secure a deserved 2-0 lead.

Roma’s next fixture will be in their home game in Coppa Italia against their rivals Lazio who were able to beat the foxes 2-0 in a thrilling game.
