Belgian club Lierse S.K. managed to win their opening match in the Europa League playoffs as they defeated giants Standard de Liege 1-0.

According to the Belgian League system, teams ranked 7th to 15th enter a playoff alongside three teams from the second division, to secure a spot in next season’s UEFA Europa League.

El-Gabbas and his teammates were able to snatch an important win as Manuel Benson scored the team’s only goal in the 16 minute. With no dangerous chances from both sides, the match ended 1-0 to the Egypt-owned Belgian club.

Lierse were drawn in Group A alongside KV Mechelen, Standard Liege, Sint-Truidense, Waasland-Beveren and Union Saint-Gilloise. The winner of this group will face the winner of Group B to determine the playoff winner, with the winner facing the fourth or the fifth-placed team of the Champions League playoff for the Europa League ticket.
