Omar Gaber remains on bench as Basel reach Swiss Cup final
Egypt international Omar Gaber watched from the bench as Basel defeated Winterthur 3-1 on Wednesday to reach the Swiss Cup final.
Basel and Winterthur were unable to break the deadlock in the first-half of their semi-final game as the scoreline was 0-0 at the interval.
Ten minutes into the second half, Matias Delgado scored a controversial penalty to give his side the lead. Five minutes from time, Manuel Akanji doubled Basel’s lead to move one step closer to securing a spot in the Cup final.
Winterthur, who compete at the Swiss Challenge League, were then able to pull one back as Arxhend Cani made it 2-1 with only three minutes to go.
However, substitute Alexander Fransson, who came on to replace Delgado in the 81st minute, secured Basel’s qualification with a goal in the dying minutes of the game.
Basel will play the final on May 25 against FC Sion, who defeated Luzern 6-5 in a penalty shootout after a goalless 120 minutes. It will be a repeat of the 2015 Swiss Cup final, which saw Sion claim the title after beating Basel 3-0.
