Pharaohs Abroad Roundup: Abdel-Shafy features in Al Ahli draw

Ahmed Hassan ‘Kouka’ – SC Braga (Portugal)
April 7 – Primeira Liga: Egypt’s Ahmed Hassan ‘Kouka’ missed Braga’s game due to injury as his side defeated Feirense 1-0 in the 28th fixture of the Portuguese Primeira Liga. Federico Cartabia scored the game’s only goal four minutes before the break. Following the win, Braga currently sit fourth in the league table with 50 points from 28 games. They are set to face second-placed Porto on April 15.
Mohamed Abdel-Shafy – Al Ahli (Saudi Arabia)
April 7 – Saudi Professional League: Egypt’s Mohamed Abdel-Shafy came on as a second-half substitute as Al Ahli drew 1-1 with Al Batin. Salman Al Moasher opened the scoring for Al Ahli around the one-hour mark. Jhonnattann Benites equalised in the 79th minute for Al Batin, just one minute after Abdel-Shafy came on to replace Al Moasher. Al Ahli now sit third with 45 points from 22 matches and are set to face leaders Al Hilal on April 15.
Sam Morsy – Wigan Athletic (England)
April 8 – EFL Championship: Egypt’s Sam Morsy came on as a second-half substitute in the 52nd minute, as Wigan defeated Rotherham United 3-2 in the 41st fixture of the Championship. The guests opened the scoring around the half-hour mark before Gabriel Obertan equalised four minutes later. Rotherham regained their lead but then Alex Gilbey made it 2-2 before Nick Powell scored the winner in the 90th minute. Following the win, Wigan currently sit 23rd in the league table with 37 points.
Omar Gaber – Basel (Switzerland)
April 9 – Swiss Super League: Omar Gaber was left out of the squad as Basel were held to a 1-1 draw at home against Young Boys. The visitors had a better first half and had the lead at halftime courtesy of an 18th-minute goal by Yoric Ravet. The hosts tried to respond to going behind but didn’t settle in the match until the second half. Mohamed Elyonoussi had Basel level in the 54th minute. They, however, couldn’t add another despite having a man advantage after Roger Assale was sent off in the 74th minute.
Karim Hafez – Lens (France)
April 10 – Ligue 2: Egypt’s Karim Hafez played 61 minutes as Lens defeated AC Ajaccio 6-3 in the 32nd fixture of Ligue 2. Following the win, Lens currently occupy the second league spot on 55 points, just one point away from leaders Brest. Lens’ next game will be against Auxerre on April 15.
