Squash: Dessouky reaches second round of El Gouna International
A total of seven Egyptians secured their spots at the second round of the El Gouna International Squash Open tournament.
Egypt’s Fares Dessouky made an astonishing comeback to win over three-time World Champion Nick Matthew 3-2 after the Englishman won the first two sets. However, Dessouky put in an impressive performance to win the game (10-12, 11-4, 7-11, 11-5, 11-6).
“I’m very happy with the win, last time it was a close game and I lost it 3-1,” Dessouky told PSA World Tour.
“He’s very experienced and today I don’t know how I won. The crowd was always behind me from the first point, so that was a great thing for me today. It gave me a push and I kept on going from the first point to the end of the game,” he added.
Meanwhile, World Champion Karim Abdel Gawad claimed a 3-0 victory over compatriot Zahed Mohamed and Egypt’s Karim Ali Fathi defeated Saurav Ghosal 3-1 to reach the second round.
Dessouky, Gawad and Fathi join Shorbagy brothers, Mohamed AbouelGhar and Mazen Hesham who already secured their spots in the second round.
Gawad, the World No.2, will face Spain’s Borja Golan, Dessouky will play against Australia’s Ryan Cuskelly, and Fathi will set up a second-round clash with Simon Rösner.
On the other hand, World No.6 Ali Farag was knocked out of the competition after a shocking defeat against Peruvian World No.22 Diego Elias. Ryan Cuskelly defeated Egyptian qualifier Mohamed Reda, while Golan beat Egypt’s Omar Abdel Meguid.
