Handball: Al Ahly beat Zamalek to win African Super Cup, reach IHF Super Globe
Al Ahly handball team have won the African Super Cup title at the expense of Zamalek on Wednesday to qualify for the 2017 IHF Super Globe in Qatar.
The Red Devils ended the first half with a 15-12 advantage before extending their lead in the second half to win the game held at Agadir, Morocco by a 29-23 scoreline.
Al Ahly qualified for the African Super Cup after claiming the African Champions League title for the fifth time in their history. Zamalek, however, played the Super Cup after winning the Cup Winners’ Cup title.
Zamalek, who last won the Super Cup title in 2012, missed the chance to add a fifth title to their name. Meanwhile, Al Ahly, who just claimed their first ever title, will represent the African continent in the 2017 IHF Super Globe, which will be held in Qatar in September.
The Red Castle had participated at the IHF Super Globe twice before; the first was in 2007 when the Red Castle hosted the tournament in Cairo, while in 2015 they were invited by the International Handball Federation to take part in the competition, after finishing second in the 2014 African Champions League.
