Dost nets hat-trick in Sporting’s 3-2 win over Braga
Braga suffered a 3-2 defeat in a thrilling game against third-placed Sporting CP in round 31 of the Primeira Liga on Sunday.
Sc Braga: Marafona, Baiano, Rosic, Ferreira, Goiano, Santos, Battaglia, Vukcevic, Horta, Stojiljkovic, Fonte
Sporting CP: Patricio, Schelotto, Coates, Oliveira, Zeegelaar, Carvalho, Gelson, Silva, Cesar, Dost, Ruiz
Egypt international Ahmed Hassan ‘Kouka’ was not included in Braga’s hosting squad due to an injury which has been keeping him sidelined since his appearance with the Egyptian national team in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
The match started with the best way possible for the hosts as they went on to score just 13 minutes into the game from a shot by Ricardo Horta, right after their goalkeeper Marafona was able to deny a goal from Sporting’s Gelson.
Twenty-five minutes into the game, Sporting were already forced to make an early substitution as Alan Ruiz went down after a harsh tackle and was replaced by Daniel Podence.
Sporting came back to their senses again after conceding the goal and pressed high up the pitch to try and equalise and they were just inches wide as Adrien Silva missed from the spot 10 minutes before half time.
Sporting were the dominant side for most periods of the first half with a ball percentage that reached 67 per cent by the end of the first half.
The second period went with the same scenario of the first half, with Sporting playing with a high defensive line to try and equalise.
Sporting received another penalty after a tackle from Marcelo Goiano on Bas Dost who was able to level up the score from the spot for the Lions.
Braga seemed satisfied with the point after having just two shots on target after 65 minutes of the game, while the guests were able to have a total of seven shots on target out of 10.
And with only 15 minutes left in the game, the 27-year-old Dutch forward, Bas Dost, was able to score his second of the game with a striking header from Marvin Zeegelaar’s cross.
Sporting’s lead, however, lasted for four minutes only, as Rui Fonte was able to score the equaliser with 10 minutes to play giving the game the excitement it lacked in the first period.
Five minutes later, Bas Dost completed his hat-trick with a powerful header to regain Sporting’s lead in an unbelievable second half that wasn’t predictable for the Lions’ fans.
The referee gave just three minutes of injury time which witnessed a couple of chances from Braga but the scoreline remained the same thanks to Patricio’s smart saves.
Braga remain fifth on 51 points, 16 behind third-placed Sporting with three rounds remaining. Braga’s next game in the Primeira Liga will be against Moreirense on Friday.
