Al Ahly held to goalless stalemate by Zanaco

Record eight-time African champions Al Ahly were held to a goalless draw by Zambian champions at Borg El-Arab Stadium in the Group D opener on Saturday.

There was an early chance for Al Ahly within the open five minutes, but Ivorian striker Souleymane Coulibaly headed off target.

Al Ahly defender Mohamed Naguib then made a decisive interception in front of his goal, preventing Zanaco from scoring. This was the only moment the Zambian champions threatened the hosts in the first half, with Toaster Nsabata being the busier of the two goalkeepers.

Hosts Al Ahly came out of the half time fired up, persisting from where they left before going for the recess.

Afterward, Nigerian striker Junior Ajayi squared the ball to Abdallah El-Said whose effort was skied over the bar.

Meanwhile, the hosts relied heavily on counter-attacks and had a number of chances but failed to cause real threat on the hosts’ goal.

Just in the closing stages of the encounter, Toaster Nsabata made a brilliant save, denying Coulibaly from a close range one-on-one situation in stoppage time.

Gambian referee Bakary Gassama blew the final whistle after four minutes of injury time as the Zambian side picked up a vital point away in Egypt.

Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca top Group D after beating Coton Sport of Cameroon 2-0 at Stade Mohamed V on Saturday.
