Omar Gaber wins Swiss Cup with FC Basel
FC Basel secured their second title of the season by winning the Swiss Cup with a 3-0 victory over Sion in the final on Thursday.
Omar Gaber didn’t feature for the Swiss side and remained on the bench for the cup final, watching his side winning their first Swiss Cup title since 2012.
Basel went into the game as heavy favourites, qualifying to the final after beating fourth-tier side Zug 94, FC Tuggen, FC Zürich, and FC Winterthur.
Matías Delgado gave Basel the lead two minutes after the half-time break, before Ivorian international Adama Traoré doubled his side’s lead in the 62nd minute. Then Michael Lang scored the winning goal in the 89th minute.
Omar Gaber became the second Egyptian player to win the Swiss Cup after Essam El-Hadary, who lift the cup with Sion in his only season in Europe in 2009.
Mohamed Salah, Mohamed Elneny, and Ahmed Hamoudi have all failed to win the domestic cup with the Swiss giants, despite reaching the final in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
The Swiss Cup is Omar Gaber’s second trophy with FC Basel this season, after lifting the Swiss league title last month.
