Roma clinch second place with last-gasp victory over Genoa
Diego Perotti scored a 90th-minute goal to help Roma beat Genoa 3-2 and clinch a second-place finish in the Serie A on Sunday.
Pietro Pellegri, 16, opened the scoring for Genoa after three minutes only to become the first player born in 2001 to score a Serie A goal.
However, Edin Dzeko levelled for Roma seven minutes later. This marked his 29th goal of the season, which ensured he’d finish as the Serie A top scorer.
Ten minutes into the second half, Egypt international Mohamed Salah made way for Roma legend Francesco Totti, who came on for the last time as a Roma player.
With 16 minutes to go, Roma took the lead as Dzeko set-up Daniele De Rossi for the Giallorossi’s second goal. The guests needed only five minutes to equalise as Darko Lazovic headed Diego Laxalt cross to make it 2-2.
As the game seemed to be headed for a draw, second-half substitute Perotti fired home in the 90th minute to give Roma a 3-2 victory.
Following the win, Roma secured their direct qualification for next year’s Champions League group stage. The Giallorossi who finished one point ahead of Napoli would have entered the Champions League play-offs had they failed to win on Sunday.
