Al Ahly coach El-Badry reflects on ‘record-breaking’ league season
Al Ahly manager Hossam El-Badry revealed he was confident of winning the Egyptian Premier League title, saying the Red Castle achieved remarkable records this season.
The Red Devils have been crowned Egyptian champions for the 39th time in their history and for the second consecutive season with four games left to play, topping the league with 76 points, 12 clear of title rivals Misr El-Maqassa.
El-Badry expressed his happiness following their title decider game against second-placed Maqassa, which ended in a 2-2 draw, and dedicated the league title to Al Ahly fans.
“We only focused on making Al Ahly fans happy and that’s what was accomplished at the end with winning the league,” El-Badry began.
“I was confident of winning the league and our efforts during the season were successful. After the end of the competition, everyone should analyse the results and the numbers. What Al Ahly accomplished in comparison to the past seasons is a remarkable record,” El-Badry emphasised.
The Red Devils secured the domestic title without suffering a single defeat and conceded only nine goals in 30 games this season.
“Our problem this season was missing easy opportunities. In many games, we’re in control and reached the goal, but we didn’t score. We lost the Egyptian Super Cup and some points in a number of games due to this issue,” El-Badry added.
After securing the league title, Al Ahly will now focus on their CAF Champions League campaign. Record eight-time African champions Al Ahly, who top Group D with four points, will host Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca in their third group stage match on June 4 at Borg El-Arab Stadium.
