Junior Ajayi was involved in both goals, scoring one, leading Al Ahly to a 2-0 home win over Wydad Casablanca in the CAF Champions League.

Al Ahly XI: Sherif Ekramy; Ahmed Fathi, Saad Samir, Ahmed Hegazy, Ali Maaloul; Hossam Ashour, Amr El-Sulaya, Walid Soliman, Abdallah El-Said, Momen Zakaria; Junior Ajayi.

The game began as an open one, with lots of space in the midfield. Abdallah El-Said took advantage of this by quickly putting his mark on the game. Every Al Ahly chance had El-Said’s footprints on it, including the first goal.

In the 23rd minute, El-Said’s delightful long ball found Ajayi on the edge of the box, whose deft touch and turn gave him space to fire off a shot, which the keeper saved. Momen Zakaria was the first player to the rebound, and he slotted home from close range to give the Red Devils the 1-0 lead.

On the stroke of half time, Wydad could have, and should have, drawn level. Former El-Geish striker William Jebor found himself with the ball at his feet at the edge of the six-yard box. He fired a shot off, but Sherif Ekramy managed a spectacular reflex save to keep his side ahead going into the half.

The second half was played mostly in the midfield, with neither side really able to create any chances. In the 65th minute, Hossam Ghaly replaced Abdallah El-Said. 12 minutes later, Al Ahly added their second.

Ali Maaloul capped off his great run by sending a cross into the box, but before it could be met by an Ahly player, a Wydad defender leaped in and deflected the ball to Junior Ajayi, who was wide open inside the six-yard box. He made no mistake, and he gave the home team a 2-0 lead in front of the delighted fans.

Al Ahly are now joint top of their group with Zanaco at 7 points, while Wydad sit at 3 points in third, and Cotton Sport languish at the bottom of the group with 0 points.

Al Ahly will have a rematch against Wydad on June 21 in Casablanca before heading to Zambia to play Zanaco on July 1. The Red Devils finish their group campaign at home against Cotton Sport on July 7.
