Al Ahly president refutes Souleymane Coulibaly allegations

Mahmoud Taher on Coulibaly

Al Ahly chairman and president denied Souleymane Coulibaly’s controversial allegations of mistreatment from the club and players during his time with the Red Devils.

The Ivorian striker, who was chosen as Al Ahly’s player of the month for April, left Egypt and traveled to London without informing his club, which made the Red Devils lodge a complaint to FIFA against him to preserve the club’s rights.

He later issued a controversial statement on his Twitter account in which he claimed to be mistreated by his teammates and that his family didn’t feel comfortable practicing Christianity in Egypt.

“We deny all of Coulibaly’s allegations. What he claims never happened and he was never mistreated or abused by the club’s coach or players,” Taher said in a press release.

Taher pointed out that he is surprised that a player who claimed to be abused by his club was saying days before to the media in Egypt that he was happy to play for Al Ahly and that he wishes to one of the team’s top scorers.

“Logically, if he was being abused he should have immediately spoken about this as soon as he left us, not after we filed a complaint to FIFA,” he explained. “Al Ahly will not be blackmailed and will not back down until Coulibaly pays for what he did.”

The president also refused the player’s allegations in which he said that his family was not able to practice their religion safely. “This is a false accusation and a lie. He thinks that by saying this we will withdraw our complaint and back down but Al Ahly will not be blackmailed,” he concluded.

Al Ahly’s player of the month for April joined the Cairo giants last January from Scottish side Kilmarnock for $800,000 after nearly joining arch-rivals Zamalek.
