Handball: Al Ahly withdraw from IHF Super Globe in Qatar
Egyptian side Al Ahly have announced on Friday their withdrawal from the 2017 IHF Super Globe set to be held in Qatar in August.
The Cairo giants withdrawal comes in support of Egypt’s earlier decision to cut diplomatic ties with Qatar, accusing it of supporting terrorism. Egypt was among four Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia and UAE, who severed their ties with Qatar earlier this month.
Al Ahly had qualified to this tournament after winning the African Super Cup title at the expense of Zamalek in April.
“The withdrawal comes in support of the state’s decision to boycott Qatar,” Al Ahly executive director Sherin Shams said.
Chairman of Egyptian Handball Federation Khaled Hamouda had revealed that even if Al Ahly had accepted to participate, the Egyptian Federation was going to prevent them as the Egyptian ministry of youth and sports had announced boycotting any sporting events with Qatar.
Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Zamalek previously announced boycotting Qatari network beIN Sports and banned its staff from entering their headquarters.
