Egyptian champions Al Ahly crashed to their first defeat of the season as they fell to a 2-0 loss against Wydad Casablanca in the CAF Champions League on Wednesday.

Neither side were able to create decent chances during the first half, which saw Wydad control possession without posing a real threat on Al Ahly’s goal.

However, the hosts came close to breaking the deadlock just before half-time but Mo’men Zakaria cleared the danger as the first half ended goalless.

Three minutes into the second, the hosts were already 1-0 up after Wydad’s Fabrice Ondama exploited an error by Al Ahly defender Ahmed Hegazy to slot the ball past Sherif Ekramy. This marked the first goal Al Ahly have conceded in their 2017 CAF Champions League campaign.

On the one-hour mark, Al Ahly manager Hossam El Badry brought on Saleh Gomaa to replace Walid Soliman before Amr Gamal replaced Amr El-Sulaya ten minutes later.

As the record eight-time African Champions were pushing for an equaliser, Wydad doubled their lead through Walid El Karti. A cross from Mohamed Ounajem was headed by substitute El Karti into Ekramy’s net in the 77th minute.

The Red Devils, who turned in one of their worst displays this season, barely had a shot on target. However, they had a chance to reduce the deficit seven minutes from time when Ahmed Fathi’s low cross found Karim Nedved near the six-yard box before he sent the ball to the stands.

Despite the defeat, Al Ahly remain on top of Group D level on seven points with Zambia’s Zanaco, who’ll face Coton Sport of Cameroon later in the day. Wydad, however, sit third with six points, while Cotonsport languish at the bottom of the group with zero points.

The Red Castle will travel to face Zanaco early in July before hosting Coton Sport in their last group stage match.
