Egyptian side Smouha suffered a 2-1 defeat against Sudan’s Hilal Obayed in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage on Tuesday.

Both sides were able to create some chances during the first half but they lacked the final touch as they went into half-time goalless.

Abo Baker Girfa opened the scoring for the hosts in the 72nd minute after a blunder by Smouha keeper Mohamed Abou-Gabal.

With five minutes to go, Islam Mohareb sent a powerful strike from inside the box to score an equaliser in what seemed to be enough for his side to claim a draw.

However, Hilal’s Nelson Ladzagla scored a 94th-minute winner to secure his side all three points and put them in first place ahead of the last two matchdays.

Smouha currently sit at the bottom of Group C with four points, after group opponents Recreativo do Libolo claimed a 3-0 victory over Zesco United on Tuesday. The Egyptian club is now two points behind Zesco United and Recreativo do Libolo, while Hilal, who have previously claimed a 1-1 draw with Smouha in Alexandria, top the group with seven points.

The Alexandria-based team will host Zesco United late in June before playing away against Recreativo do Libolo in their last group stage game.
