Ex-Egypt manager Bob Bradley showered Mohamed Salah with praise, after the winger completed his Liverpool switch from Roma.

The American managed the Egyptian national team between 2011 and 2013, and considered Salah an integral part of his set-up after the player broke through at FC Basel.

“It was one of his first qualifiers but to come through for us at that moment – after all those months waiting for these games after Port Said and everything else at that time – and scoring the winner in those circumstances, I knew that this is a player going in the right direction. You knew he was special,” Bradley enthused, recalling when Salah secured a victory over Mozambique in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

“When I went to Egypt my assistant and right hand man, Diaa El-Sayed, told me about the young players he had just taken to Colombia for the U20 World Cup. Salah was playing for Arab Contractors in Cairo at the time. When I first saw him play for his club you could see his ability to get away from defenders, but in a young team the results were not there.”

After the Port Said massacre, the league had been stopped and players were not being paid. To look at some of the youngsters, a number of camps and friendly matches were organised, and Salah immediately grabbed the attention of everyone involved.

“In the camp you saw his explosiveness. His speed and power were at the highest level. He also wanted to learn. You knew this was a special talent.” Bradley concluded.
