First-half goals from Nigerian duo Moruf Yusuf and Stanley Ohawuchi gave Zamalek a 2-0 victory over Petrojet in gameweek 32 of the Egyptian Premier League on Tuesday.

Nigerian midfielder Moruf Yusuf broke the deadlock after 24 minutes, as he went one-on-one with Petrojet keeper Mohamed Aboul-Naga and slotted home following a through ball from Mahmoud Abdel-Razek Shikabala.

Mostafa Shebeita missed a chance to level the score for the petroleum club five minutes ahead of the break as his penalty hit the bar.

Stanley Ohawuchi doubled Zamalek’s lead just before the half-time as he rounded the Petrojet goalkeeper and slotted home following a through pass from Ahmed Tawfik.

Zamalek manager Augusto Inácio brought on Ibrahim Salah instead of Mahmoud Abdel-Aati Dunga at the one-hour mark before Mohamed Mosaad came on to replace Shikabala 10 minutes later.

Substitute Emmanuel Mayuka came close to making it 3-0 for Zamalek two minutes from time but his header went wide following a cross from Shawky El-Said.

The victory comes few days before Zamalek’s vital CAF Champions League encounter against CAPS United, whom they’ll face at Zimbabwe National Sports Stadium on Sunday.

The White Knights now sit third in the league table on 63 points, five behind second-placed Misr El-Maqassa. They edge closer to securing third place after increasing the gap with Al Masry, who sit fourth, to five points with two games to go.

Zamalek, however, await a three-point deduction at the end of the season for abandoning their game with Maqassa in gameweek 22.

Meanwhile, Petrojet sit in the eighth place with 42 points, while Al Ahly, who are on top with 80 points, have already secured the league title.
