Smouha miss out on top-four finish after losing to El-Gaish

Smouha missed out on a top-four finish after they suffered a 2-1 defeat against Tala’a El-Gaish in gameweek 33 of the Egyptian Premier League on Monday.

The Alexandria-based side needed the three points in order to maintain their chance of qualifying for next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.

However, El-Gaish managed to open the scoring on the half-hour mark as veteran playmaker Ahmed Eid Abdel-Malek scored from the spot, making it 0-1 for the away side.

Just six minutes into the second half, El-Gaish’s Assem Salah doubled his side’s lead.

In the 57th minute, El-Gaish’s Nico Dao got sent off, leaving his side one man short for the final 30 minutes.

In the dying minutes of the game, Ahmed Raouf pulled one back for Smouha to make it 1-2.

Following the loss, Smouha remain fifth with 54 points, allowing Al Masry, who have 58 points and a game in hand, to secure a top-four finish. The Port Said-based side will face league champions Al Ahly in gameweek 33 on Tuesday.

Mohammed Salama is a 21-year-old who fell in love with football since Egypt's AFCON final match against Ivory Coast! Strangely enough an Al Ahly and Al Masry fan locally. In addition, he's a hardcore Bayern Munich supporter.
