Amr Gamal leads Al Ahly to Champions League knockout stages

Amr Gamal

A brace by Amr Gamal led Al Ahly to a 3-1 win over Coton Sport in front of a vibrant home crowd to officially qualify the Red Devils to the knockout stages of the CAF Champions League.

Al Ahly XI: Sherif Ekramy; Ahmed Fathi, Ahmed Hegazy, Saad Samir, Ali Maaloul; Hossam Ashour, Amr El-Sulaya; Abdallah El-Said, Momen Zakaria; Junior Ajayi, Amr Gamal.

Fresh off interest from Bidvest Wits, Amr Gamal put on a performance to secure qualification for Al Ahly SC.

Al Ahly started the affair on the front foot, heavily attacking the Coton Sport goal. Both Gamal and Ajayi missed two chances each to put the home side on top inside the first ten minutes. Thus, it was Coton Sport who scored first, against the run of play in the 12th minute.

Amr Gamal brought the home side even two minutes later, with a strike from range beating everyone and ending up in the bottom right corner. About 20 minutes later, Abdallah El-Said finished off a delightful team move to put the Red Devils deservedly 2-1 up.

Eight minutes after half time, Gamal had his brace, heading home an Ali Maaloul free kick delivery. Gamal could have had his hat trick later in the half, but his tame shot found the arms of the Coton Sport goalkeeper.

His night came to end after being substituted for Emad Meteb in the 84th minute. The veteran Egypt striker almost got himself on the score sheet as well, but he was thwarted by the Coton Sport goalkeeper in stoppage time.

The win officially places Al Ahly in second place in their group, after Wydad Casablanca defeated Zanaco to finish top of the group. Al Ahly advances to the knockout stages to play the winner of Group C, which figures to be Tunisia’s Esperance, pending results of their final group stage match versus Saint George of Ethiopia.
