Ray Wilkins: I don’t think Liverpool needed Salah
Former English footballer Ray Wilkins does not believe that Liverpool made the best decision signing the Egyptian Pharaoh Mohamed Salah from AS Roma.
Liverpool recently managed to sign the young winger after intense negotiations with the Italian club making the Egyptian international the club’s record signing as well as the most expensive African player in history.
Although the move was praised by former Liverpool players like Luis Garcia, Patrik Berger, Sami Hyypia, Craig Bellamy and Paul Ince, Jose Mourinho’s former assistant Ray Wilkins shared Dietmar Hamann’s views opposing the signing.
“You’ve got to say, priorities. When you’re looking at what Liverpool have, they have a fantastic forward division. Can they defend? No they can’t,” Wilkins told TalkSPORT as he preferred that the Reds supported their backline and should have gone all out for Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk.
“Van Dijk is the man, but they’ve already spent £34 million on Salah from Roma. Keep that money and put it towards Van Dijk. They have enough forward options, I don’t think they needed Salah,” he added.
