Stoke City claim victory in opening pre-season friendly
Stoke City kicked off their pre-season with a 1-0 victory over Neuchâtel Xamax in their opening fixture of the 2017 Uhrencup.
Mark Hughes’ squad for the first pre-season friendly against the Swiss second-tier outfit witnessed the exclusion of Egypt international Ramadan Sobhi. The 20-year-old was among 34 players included for the training camp.
The Potters looked more dangerous although the Swiss side controlled possession during the first half. The English Premier League side lost Phil Bardsley to injury and he was replaced by Tom Edwards before both teams headed into the tunnel 0-0 at half time.
Although Hughes made extensive changes at the interval, naming an entirely different squad, his side failed to break the deadlock until the 87th minute.
As the game seemed to be headed for a draw, Mustafa Sejmenovic scored an own goal to give the Potters the three points. With three minutes to go, Verlinden sent the ball into the danger zone, which Sejmenovic slid past his own keeper as he attempted to clear it away from substitute Tyrese Campbell.
The Potters will then take on Young Boys on July 12 before playing against French champions AS Monaco on July 15.
