Salah scores on Liverpool debut in friendly against Wigan
Mohamed Salah scored on his debut for Liverpool as they played out a 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic in their second pre-season game on Friday.
The Egypt international missed the Reds’ first pre-season game where Liverpool beat Tranmere Rovers 4-0 on Wednesday, as he had to visit the British Embassy located in Paris in order to finalize the visa procedures.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp fielded a team in each half against the League One side, with new arrival Salah being included in the starting line up.
Wigan took the lead after around 20 minutes as Alex Gilbey’s low shot found the bottom corner following a Wigan free-kick.
Salah almost got his first assist for Liverpool shortly after but Wigan’s goalkeeper produced a fine save to deny Firminio.
Just before half-time, Salah levelled the scoreline after good work by Brazilian duo Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino. Coutinho played a through ball to Firmino, who squared for Salah to tap into the empty net, canceling out Gilbey’s opener and making it 1-1 at the break.
The 25-year-old winger, who joined the Reds on a five-year contract, was substituted during the half-time interval as Klopp changed all of his outfield players during the second half.
Liverpool had a number of good chances in the second half but failed to convert into goals as Salah’s first-half strike earned his side a draw against Wigan.
The Reds will next face Crystal Palace on July 19 in the Premier League Asia Trophy that will take place in Hong Kong.
