VIDEO: Zamalek through to Egypt Cup semis after 3-0 win over El-Gaish
Zamalek qualified to Egypt Cup semi-finals after claiming a 3-0 victory over Tala’a El-Gaish at El-Salam Stadium on Thursday.
Zamalek, who were knocked out of the CAF Champions League last week, had their third-choice keeper Omar Salah start the game after Zamalek chairman Mortada Mansour accused keepers Ahmed El-Shennawy and Mahmoud ‘Gennesh’ Abdel-Rehim of faking injury.
Tala’a El-Gaish controlled possession in the early stages of the game, forcing Salah into a fine save after only 10 minutes.
On the other side of the field, Hossam Paulo wasted a chance to give his side the lead on the half-hour mark after he had his penalty kick saved by El-Gaish keeper Mohamed Bassem.
Following the penalty, the White Knights intensified their attack in an attempt to break the deadlock until Stanley Ohawuchi managed to put Zamalek in front just before halftime as the Nigerian striker scored from a header after Shikabala’s cross from a corner kick.
His fellow countryman Moruf Yousef doubled the White Castle’s lead from a beautiful shot from the edge of the box halfway through the second half.
Zamalek manager Augusto Inacio brought on Emmanuel Mayuka to replace Shikabala in the 72nd minute before Ahmed Refaat came on instead of goalscorer Stanley six minutes later.
With 15 minutes remaining, Hosny Fathi killed the game as he scored a shot from inside of the box after a quick counter-attack to make it 3-0.
The defending champions will now face Al Masry in the semi-final on August 9.
