Al Ahly midfielder Saleh Gomaa is optimistic that he can soon get a call-up to the national team, following his impressive performances with the Red Devils in recent weeks.

The 23-year-old, who has been given a new lease of life recently, scored six goals for the Red Devils in all competitions this season.

“My recent performance was a message to those who criticised me. I scored six goals and assisted two during the past few weeks,” said the Al Ahly midfielder in an interview with On Sport satellite channel.

“The manager and the coaching staff of the national team know and love me. They are convinced of my abilities, and all I needed was game time. I hope that I’ll be with the national team during the upcoming qualifiers,” he added.

Egypt will travel to face Uganda on August 31 before hosting them at Borg El-Arab Stadium on September 5 in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification. The Pharaohs currently top Group E on six points, two ahead of second-placed Uganda.

On Sunday, the former ENPPI player featured for 80 minutes in the Cairo derby, where he put in a strong performance, before making way for Hossam Ashour. The Red Devils had already secured the league title four weeks before its end and managed to finish the campaign undefeated after beating Zamalek 2-0 in the final league fixture.

“Beating Zamalek is very special for us. Al Ahly players are always hungry to win. Now we are focused on the Arab Club Championship then the CAF Champions League,” concluded Gomaa.

Earlier this month, Al Ahly secured their spot in the CAF Champions League quarter-final and qualified to the Egypt Cup semis. They’ll also be competing in the Arab Club Championship scheduled to be held in Egypt between July 21 and August 5.
