Elneny features as Arsenal win after last-gap comeback against Bayern Munich
The first match for Arsenal in the International Champions Cup took place on Wednesday morning against Bayern Munich. Mohamed Elneny played the third match in a row for Arsenal as a centre-back, this time for the full 90 minutes, as manager Arsene Wenger continues to test the Egypt international in a new role this preseason.
The first half started a bit slow but out of nowhere Bayern Munich were awarded a penalty after Juan Bernat was supposedly fouled by Maitland-Niles in the box. Lewandowski slotted the ball home easily from the spot in the 9th minute and things got harder for Arsenal.
Two minutes later Welbeck played a wonderful long ball in the box for Ozil, but his volley was saved by Tom Starke.
In the 21st minute Tolisso scored a goal but it appeared to be wrongly ruled offside.
Lacazette missed a huge chance in the 32nd minute to put Arsenal back on level after Tom Starke parried away his shot. In the 37th minute, Muller fired a ball but Cech managed to save it. A few minutes later James Rodriguez was set up brilliantly but Cech pulled of a brilliant save once again to keep the score 1-0.
In the 7th minute Xhaka saved Arsenal from conceding a second goal after clearing the ball before it reaches James Rodriguez in front of an open goal.
The second half started off where it ended as Bayern Munich were dominating the match. James Rodriguez almost scored a goal in the opening minutes but Cech was there to save his shot.
In the 58th minute, Arsenal’s Egypt international was booked for a harsh challenge on Tolisso. Cech kept on impressing as he got out to the byline to prevent Ribery from going through on goal. In the 71st minute Petr Cech came off for Martinez and received a huge round of applause.
As we approached the final whistle both teams have slowed down the pace and the match becomes less eventful. In the 94th minute, the Nigerian international Iwobi equalized for Arsenal after heading in the ball past Fruchtl and sent the match to penalties.
Alaba’s penalty was saved by Martinez, and on the other hand Ramsey scored his penalty as Fruchtl moved towards the ball a bit late. Hummels stepped up and scored for Bayern Munich hoping that Arsenal missed the next penalty. Elneny’s turn came and his penalty was saved by Fruchtl.
Then both teams played two penalties each as the score was 1-1. Roman’s penalty was almost saved as Martinez went to the right direction but couldn’t get his hand on it. Meanwhile, Monreal scored his penalty brilliantly; then Renato Sanches stepped up and rattled the bar. Iwobi scored for Arsenal to put them back into the lead, before Bernat stepped up and saw Martinez save his penalty as Arsenal beat Bayern Munich on penalties.
Arsenal flipped the table in the last minute as they equalized very late in the match and went on to win on penalties. Arsenal’s next match will be another friendly against Chelsea on the 22nd at 13:40 CLT.
