In the eighth minute, Leicester sent a cross into the box but Hegazi was there to clear the ball, dispossessed Algeria international Riyad Mahrez, then kick-started a play that led to a West Brom’s goal.
It was Jay Rodriguez who opened West Brom’s scoring account in the tenth minute with a screamer, firing a right-foot strike into the top-left corner from 25 yards. Later in the 21st minute Mahrez tried to curl a shot into the goal but Hegazi was there to make another block. The former Al Ahly defender continued to block scoring attempts from Mahrez and other Leicester players.
Mahrez equalized in the 24th minute after weaving past Hegazi and Evans to put it past England and West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster.
The pace of the game slowed down with no team being able to break the deadlock. Hegazi was subbed off in the 66th minute and replaced by youngster Kane Wilson. Neither of both teams managed to clinch a winner before full time, which led the tie into penalties, where Leicester won 7-6.
